If you calculate things you won’t make a mistake, hopefully (but at times you will). It’s the element of the unknown that turns this calculation into a calculated risk. The key is to eliminate risk so that you could hit your mark for sure. This surety is the object of this game. But then again when you’re working with objects whether fully known or unknown in respect to their physical behavior, I don’t think you could eliminate risk to a complete degree because these objects are infinitely unpredictable (actually, I don’t know if their behavior is absolute or not, but let’s just say, for arguments sake that it is not absolute to a final count) but you can gain some form of control and the closer you inspect these objects the more risk you eliminate. And you gain a sense on control.
You can do this by watching the routine in everything around you and in the simple objects themselves. The “routine in everything” is the Scheme of Recurrence as stipulated by Lonergan. This can be simple or it can get gradually complicated thus depending on the scheme.
You can find the routine of things in almost anywhere in the general environment and from your immediate surroundings in everyday life. To say the least nature in and of itself is one huge routine, therefore everything can be counted and predicted thereto or not? But I don’t think you could predict nature and everything in it to one hundred percent. This elimination of risk or calculation is based on the fact that everything we see is based on Cause and Effect with some deficiency.
The primary purpose in investigating these routines is to determine the cause at every step so that we can “see” the effect before it is produced. Thus we can intercept the effect and gain a sense of control over what caused it. The more complex the routine the more information you’re going to need in order to achieve a certain level of control and limited comprehension because of unforeseen scientific discoveries.
However this investigation is infinite.
You have to keep on studying your environment over and over again until you reach a person’s mastery. What I mean by mastery is that you are going to extract generalities from these objects that are in turn reacting with other objects in the scheme wither active or in motion, and neutral – a state of rest. There are also that which are alive that adds to the unpredictable nature of schemes. The best I can do is intervene with the scheme, cut in, and identify a cause which is already an effect of another then calculate based on statistical physical laws.
These laws are always subject to closer scrutiny as they can be updated any time by the next observer. What I’m trying to ultimately say here is that I want to build on the foundations of knowledge as we have it today. By studying the cause/effect relationship in everything gives you a certain confidence in respect to reality in terms of physical objects.
And also I want to control my environment the best I can.
